Project Detail
Project: Integrated Studies of Whirling Disease in Montana Rivers Part III: Phylogenetic and Population Genetic Studies of the Oligochaete Host, Tubifex tubifex
Primary Investigator: Billie KeransProject Summary: Whirling disease infection severity varies widely among drainages, for reasons that are not well understood. One possible cause is a difference in the strain of its alternate host, the aquatic worm Tubifex tubifex. This project used molecular techniques to distinguish strains of the worm, and correlate them with levels of parasite proliferation in the laboratory. In ongoing work, worms from a variety of streams are being characterized by the technique.
